The Immigrant - The Musical
The original version of this play had a very successful run at the Mark Taper Forum and all across the country in 1991. The musical version we are presenting opened off-Broadway in 2000. The NY Times called it "a deeply satisfying new musical." It is the story of the only Jewish immigrant to settle in tiny Hamilton, Texas. It focuses on just two couples, the immigrant family of Haskell and his wife Leah, and the local banker Milton and his wife Irma, a devout Christian. Milton befriends Haskell and helps him to work his way up to ownership of a store. But their friendship is strained due to political differences over World War II.
The play is based on the personal history of the grandfather of Mark Harelik (who wrote the book). The story is told with passion, sensitivity and humor. The music hauntingly utilizes klezmer and ethnic themes to underscore this powerful production.
